Aili K. Arnell
Intern
Aili Arnell was born in Reston, VA and her aunt put her on her first pony in Middleburg at the age of 2. She went to high school in Indiana and considers herself a midwesterner and Hoosier. After attending Sarah Lawrence College for undergrad, Aili took some gap years and worked nearly every job in the equine industry including groom, barn manager, and veterinary assistant. After affirming her decision to make her passion her career, she attended Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in May 2025. She tracked Equine at Purdue which allowed her to focus solely on horses during her clinical year. She was able to continue competing lightly as an adult amateur jumper with her horse Orla during veterinary school. When Aili is not working or at the barn, she is hanging out with her English Labrador retriever, Olivia, and her cat Binx. Olivia and Binx enjoy traveling to horse shows as well. Aili looks forward to exploring the area and horse showing at Upperville in 2026.
Sophia Grant-Counard
Intern
Sophia was born and raised in Santa Cruz, California. She attended University of California, Davis for an undergraduate degree in Wildlife Conservation Biology and worked as an assistant at the equine hospital on campus throughout her undergraduate studies. She competed her horse, Malea, with the three day eventing team at UC Davis.
She made the move to Madison, Wisconsin for veterinary school. She served as president of the student chapter of AAEP and worked as an assistant in large animal surgery at UW veterinary care. Sophia’s goal is to go into equine general practice after her internship. She especially enjoys ophthalmology, dentistry, sports medicine, and emergency care.
Outside of work, Sophia loves to go trail riding with her horse, Malea, and hiking with her new puppy, Maple. She also enjoys skiing, running outdoors, and traveling.
Andrea Lindgren
Intern
Andrea grew up in Ashland, VA where she spent most of her time riding her bike around the Center of the Universe and cheering on the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets with her family. She credits her love of horses to her family in Ocala, FL and Sweet Pea the pony, who she spent time riding while visiting her cousins. Andrea started leasing and showing on the local hunter/jumper circuit. She eventually bought her first horse, Cody, who she showed through college and vet school when home for the summer and is now with her close by for her internship.
Andrea attended Berry College in Rome, GA, where she majored in Animal Science and minored in Chemistry and Business Administration. She was a goalie for the Women’s Lacrosse team and loved every minute of her time at Berry. She attended Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine with the plans of becoming an equine veterinarian. She was actively involved in the student chapter of AAEP and Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) and received her Business Certificate.
Andrea enjoys many aspects of equine medicine but has a special interest in podiatry, ophthalmology, and lameness. In her free time, Andrea enjoys spending time with her horse Cody, reading, taking care of her plants (27 and counting!), and exploring new places.
Claire Long
Intern
Claire grew up in the Chicago suburbs and developed an appreciation for horses at a young age through yearly summer visits to Mackinac Island, MI.
During the end of her undergraduate studies, she began working at an equine referral practice in Driftwood, Texas where she fell in love with equine medicine and never looked back. She attended veterinary school at Texas A&M University and graduated with honors. In veterinary school, she held active leadership roles in the Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and was awarded the Dr. Bill Rood Leadership Award.
Claire enjoys all aspects of equine practice including emergency medicine, dentistry, and podiatry.
In her free time she enjoys riding, creating stained glass art, hiking, and spending time with her husband, Ryan, and their dog, Oakley.
Ashlyn Rustin
Intern
Ashlyn grew up in Madison, Georgia where she began riding hunter/jumpers at the age of 9. She attended the UGA for both undergraduate and veterinary school (GO DAWGS!)
During veterinary school Ashlynn was an active member of the student AAEP chapter and worked as both a student vet assistant and a surgery technician in the UGA large animal hospital for after hour emergencies.
She graduated summa cum laude and received a certificate of merit for large animal medicine and surgery. While she loves all aspects of equine medicine she is especially passionate about sports medicine and rehabilitation, emergency and critical care and surgery. In her free time Ashlyn enjoys riding her horse Izzy, playing fetch with her corgi Gracie, hiking, snowboarding and getting cozy with a good book.
