Hospital Services

Located in The Plains, Virginia, The Piedmont Equine Practice provides medical care for horses in the surrounding counties of Fauquier, Rappahannock, Warren, Prince William, Loudoun, Frederick, Clarke, parts of Fairfax and Culpeper and some adjacent counties in Maryland and West Virginia.

Surgical Services

Courtney Bolam, DVM, Doctor of Veterinary Science, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons-Large Animal provides regular in-hospital emergency and surgical services.

Catherine Nunnery joins us as a consulting ophthalmologist on a regular basis and performs surgery for acute and chronic conditions. She served as President and Ophthalmologist of Equine Veterinary Vision, Inc., an ambulatory large animal ophthalmology practice in Maryland and Virginia. She was also Staff Ophthalmologist at VCA Referral Associates in Gaithersburg, MD.

  • treatment of joint lacerations & infections
  • soft tissue orthopaedic procedures (emergency & elective)
  • castration
  • isolation – our dedicated isolation unit with separate entrance, ventilation, and drainage make it possible for us to care for horses with potentially infectious diseases
  • hospitalized care for acute conditions
  • ophthalmic surgery for both acute & chronic conditions with Dr. Catherine Nunnery
  • elective arthroscopy for OCD & chip removal

Internal Medicine

Internal Medicine referral services are available through Dr. Amy Polkes a board certified Equine Internal Medicine Specialist. Contact information to schedule an appointment is 845-444-0134 or EQUINEIMED.COM

  • Neurologic Evaluation: thorough neurologic exam with plain radiography, contrast myelography and cerebral spinal fluid sampling and interpretation.
  • Gastrointestinal Evaluation: abdominal ultrasonography, abdominal paracentesis, absorption tests, gastroscopy and biopsy procedures.
  • Respiratory Evaluation: complete respiratory examination with endoscopy, ultrasonography, radiography, transtracheal aspirate, broncheoalveolar lavage, thoracocentesis and biopsy procedures to evaluate the upper and lower respiratory tract.
  • Urologic Tract Evaluation: using ultrasonography and endoscopy (cystoscopy).
  • Cardiac Evaluation: complete cardiac exam and echocardiography and electrocardiography (ECG).
