About The Piedmont Equine Practice

The Piedmont Equine Practice was founded by Dr. John Nolan in April of 1996. Over the next several years, Drs. Davis, Bowman, Anikis, and Diehl joined the practice. As a group of peers—and with Drs. Nolan, Davis, and Anikis having been classmates in veterinary school—a culture of collaboration and mutual mentorship quickly developed.

The first office was in the living room of Dr. Nolan’s rental house. The second was an 800-square-foot second-floor space in Marshall, Virginia. As the practice grew, that space went from spacious to cramped, especially as staff and pharmacy needs increased. It became clear that a larger facility was necessary.

At the same time, the practice aimed to offer more complex procedures than could be performed at clients’ barns. The team purchased the old Fauquier 4-H fairgrounds and, after several years of steady progress, opened the clinic and barn facility in November 2006. The clinic successfully expanded the practice’s lameness and elective surgery caseload and revealed an additional opportunity: providing emergency and critical care.

This area of the practice grew over time and was further supported with the addition of surgical expertise, including Dr. Courtney Bolam. In 2015, the clinic underwent another expansion, adding new isolation stalls, a larger radiology suite, additional office space, and living quarters for visiting veterinary students.

Today, Piedmont Equine Clinic manages a demanding caseload across critical care, lameness, and ambulatory services and has grown to a team of 19 veterinarians.
